About

Coming to his mastery of kineticism via wire figurative pieces and university. Using geometric forms in a variety of combinations he mesmerizes with the way often repetitive shapes interact when they move.

Exhibition History

Biography / CV

Ivan was born in London in 1972. He studied at Middlesex University London in 1991. He went on to pursue careers in carpentry, cabinet making and interior design while privately pursuing his interest in sculpture. He now makes sculptures full time in his workshop in Pembrokeshire, South Wales.

Ivans interest in sculpture began at a young age and his has had an enduring fascination with wire as a medium. His early two dimensional efforts soon evolved inot three dimensional figures. He added movement to his work and the figurative subjects gradually gave way to geometrical forms.

Ivans current work uses his unique kinetic mechanisms to create geometrical forms that mutate upon the introduction of energy, usually by the viewer. The repetition of identical elements is a recurrent theme in his work, and by this means he generates complex and fluid sculptures. Whilst working prmarily in wire, he now uses a variety of materials to give form and ballast to his work.

Ivan takes inspiration for his geometry from iconic natural forms, the DNA helix, the movement of the celestial bodies through space, sound and light waves and the golden spiral that forms the template for the growth of plants. The movements of his sculptures mimic those of these dynamic geometries, imbuing them with a uniquely organic motion.

One of his kinetic designs has been developed for the retail market while other versions have been realised on a variety of scales from a few centimetres to several meters in lenght. He has recently completed and installed a 25 foot kinetic piece in the entrance of the Treatment Centre and Addenbrooke's hospital in Cambridge.

Ivan has a strong connection with Guernsey, having married a local girl, Lucy daughter of Peter and Sadie Morgan. Last year he performed a weeks residency at Le Rondin School where he created a tree of life for the sensory garden with the assistance of the students.

"The best artist has that thought alone Which is contained within the marble shell; The sculptor's hand can only break the spell To free the figures slumbering in the stone."
